Having Your Say
What we asked you
We asked you to put in order of preference four areas of work. These were:
More of a Say for Children and Young People
Being Heard and Making a Difference
Marginalised Voices Sought and Heard
Making Policy a Reality
What you told us
You told us that your top preference was Being Heard and Making a Difference.
What we are doing
We are working with partner organisations to develop Participation Standards.
A policy paper is being published in April 2010 as part of the
Make it Right campaign
, which will detail with how Government should make sure the voice of children is heard and listened to.
We are working with Government to make sure school councils are set up and working in all schools.
The NICCY Participation Forum was set up in 2008 with other statutory and voluntary organisations to support young people having a say in the decisions that affect their lives. This forum encourages the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences, and helps develop good practice and working together. The forum meets two times a year.
We have developed and are currently piloting a ‘Stepping Stones’ outreach programme.
Further develop the role of the NICCY Youth Panel within the organisation, and be creative in how they support the work of NICCY.
We will continue and expand our ‘Train the Trainers’ programme providing tools to both student teachers and full time teachers, explaining the work of NICCY and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
