Presentation of review welcomed

The Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY), Patricia Lewsley, welcomed the presentation of a review of her office to the Committee for the Office of First Minister and deputy First Minister.

“The review of NICCY confirms the need for the office to promote and safeguard the rights and best interests of children and young people in Northern Ireland.

“When I took up post on January 8th, 2007 I knew that I would be building on solid foundations built by the first Commissioner, Nigel Williams, and the dedicated staff team.

“In addition to meeting 1,800 children and young people – to hear their views directly – I have used these first 10 months to evaluate and examine how best NICCY can continue to help children and young people.

“The findings of this review present opportunities to create new partnerships and to keep on developing our work.”

“And within a week I will be asking everyone in Northern Ireland, and children and young people especially, to help us decide the issues we will be tackling for the 500,000 children and young people I work on behalf of.

“I will listen to those views and act upon them so that we here at NICCY can continue to improve what we do and how we do it.”
