Statement from the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young people, Patricia Lewsley-Mooney:
As Commissioner for children and young people, and as a parent and grandparent, I have been deeply concerned to hear young Ashya Kings story, reported over the last number of days.
While I cannot comment on the individual circumstances surrounding this case, I know that there is a child and a family at the centre of this. I also know that the best interests and welfare of any child or young person should always be paramount and always be put first.
I call for all those involved to ensure a speedy resolution to this case, so that no further stress or undue suffering is caused.
I think it is also important that the authorities take time to review and learn from what has happened here, to ensure that no young person and their family go through this type of heartbreaking situation in future.
