NORTHERN Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, Patricia Lewsley today expressed her concerns at the conditions at the children’s hospital and maternity service.

Ms Lewsley visited the hospital at the invitation of the Maternity Liaison Committee. She toured both the Children’s Hospital and the Royal Jubilee maternity service, accompanied by Dr Heather Steen, Associate Medical Director and Joy Poots, Chair of the Maternity Liaison Committee.

The Commissioner witnessed at first hand the restricted conditions for patients, their visiting families and staff.

“I want to praise the dedication and workmanship of staff, they are doing their best in antiquated conditions. I am concerned that the facilities do not allow children and their families to receive the service which is fit for the 21st century.

“I am today writing to the Chief Executive of Belfast Health and Social Care Trust to outline my concerns.

“A development on this site is badly needed to meet existing service demands.”
