Children’s Rights Video Launched

12 November 2003 News

The Derry Children’s Commission, a unique organisation in Northern Ireland working for children’s rights, has just launched a new video produced by children for children called “We’ve got the Right”. Speaking at the launch in the Nerve Centre in Derry, the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children Nigel Williams congratulated the children on making such an excellent video.

He said, “This video makes the whole issue of children’s rights real. The children researched it thoroughly, and chose issues of concern to them. The very fact that they made it themselves and are speaking out reflects Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child”

The video was made by children from Fountain Primary School and Longtower Primary School. It includes a recording of a visit the children made to Derry Guildhall where they quizzed the Mayor about issues of concern. The children also call for their different cultural backgrounds to be respected, and for better play facilities.
