The Children’s Commissioner had an introductory meeting with the Secretary of State Hilary Benn today, focusing on some of the most pressing issues facing children and young people.

Discussions centered around poverty, incorporation of children’s rights into domestic law, homelessness, mental health and the importance of early intervention. The meeting aimed to highlight the urgent needs and rights of children throughout Northern Ireland.

Both parties engaged in an open discussion on how systemic issues such as poverty and homelessness directly impact children’s wellbeing and their future prospects.

The Commissioner emphasised the critical importance of inclusive policies and the need for collaborative efforts to improve the lives of all children, especially the most vulnerable.

The discussions also addressed the rising concerns surrounding mental health among young people and the urgent need for enhanced support systems.

“Today’s meeting laid a strong foundation for future collaboration and demonstrated an understanding of the importance of prioritising children’s rights in governmental policies,” the Commissioner said.

The Commissioner looks forward to further discussions and collaboration with the SoS and his team, ensuring that the voices of children remain central to policy-making processes.
