Commissioner Speaks at Health Action Zone Child Safety Forum

19 November 2003 News

The Commissioner for Children and Young People, Nigel Williams, spoke today at a forum on child safety arranged by the North and West Belfast Health Action Zone in the Belfast City Hall. In his comments the Commissioner recalled his previous work at the international children’s charity Childnet where they had pioneered a number of innovative internet safety programmes.

He said “Internet safety is an interesting case study for other child safety issues. The lessons learned about partnership working, about their being no magic solution, about knowing your audience and using appropriate media to get the message across are all applicable to many other child safety issues.”

The Commissioner went on to describe the main role of his office, and shared some of the challenges which would arise, including getting the balance right between individual complaints and reviews of more general issues affecting children.
