THE Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, Barney McNeany, today urged individuals and organisations to respond to the Government’s consultation on its play strategy.

The Commissioner said that today’s launch of the consultation by Government was an important step towards making sure that children and young people had better, safer and appropriate facilities for play.

“We at NICCY are pleased that Government is now advancing play as a key issue,” he said. “Children and young people have told us that what is available currently is simply not good enough, and that is why play is one of our key priorities.

“As part of our role to tell Government when services aren’t good enough we have told Ministers on several occasions the importance of taking this forward. We are very happy that this important strategy for children and young people is now being taken forward”

Mr McNeany said it was now vital that as many people as possible look at the proposals for a play strategy and respond to the consultation.

“It is important that there is a wide response to this consultation so we can look forward to an action plan and resources that bring about clear improvements quickly”
