Communities are essential for supporting children’s Mental Health ~ Chris Quinn

The Commissioner has highlighted the importance of our communities in protecting and supporting children’s mental health.

Chris Quinn, said: “During Mental Health Awareness Week, I want to emphasise the vital importance of community and belonging in supporting children’s mental health.

“One in eight children in Northern Ireland experience emotional problems so it is important to recognise that strong community bonds are among our most effective defences against these challenges.

“Effective planning and commissioning of health and social care services must consider the high prevalence of mental health issues among children and young people in NI, as highlighted by the 2020 Youth Wellbeing Prevalence Survey.

“The survey indicates rates of anxiety, depression, and self-injurious behaviours are significantly higher than in other UK regions, with many children experiencing emotional difficulties and suicidal thoughts.”

The Commissioner continued: “Community plays a vital role in early intervention, prevention, and well-being through social connections and support networks.

“NICCY’s “Still Waiting” report underscores the value children and young people place on community-based services, emphasising the need for adequate funding to ensure these services remain accessible and effective. Recognising these factors is essential for the successful delivery of the Mental Health Strategy.

“As Children’s Commissioner, I encourage everyone—families, schools, organisations and communities—to work together to create inclusive environments where children feel they belong.

“Let us all work on our relationships, promote understanding, and ensure every child knows they are part of something bigger, because together, we can nurture healthier, happier, and more connected young lives.”
