Review on children’s rights available online

NORTHERN Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, Patricia Lewsley, today publishes the first phase of her landmark review on children’s rights online.

The Rights Review is the first step the Commissioner is taking in making available research into the state of children’s rights. The complete Children’s Rights Review will be available in January 2009.

The report published online today is an overview of current legislation, policy, research and literature on children’s rights in Northern Ireland.

It follows on from the comprehensive ‘Children’s Rights in Northern Ireland’ published by NICCY in 2005.

“During the summer of 2007 my staff carried out extensive fieldwork with children, young people, parents, carers and those who work with children and young people,” said Ms Lewsley.

“The final report, when published in January, will combine this fieldwork with this review I am making available online today.

“We know that children’s rights in Northern Ireland could be better, and by publishing the report today it is one more step towards finding out the exact state of those rights.”

The Commissioner said she was publishing the review today to help others in Northern Ireland working with children and young people.

Commissioned by NICCY, it was completed by external researchers, Laura McMahon and Paula Keenan.
