NICCY appoints new Interim Chief Executive

25 March 2025

The Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People has announced Alex Tennant as their new Interim Chief Executive.

Alex will take up the post on 31 March 2025.

Joining NICCY in 2009, Alex has led the Policy and Participation team through many triumphs and challenges, whilst always continuing to advocate for children and young people’s rights and participation across Northern Ireland policy.

After a year of supporting the Commissioner in partnership with the Head of Legal and Investigations, Joanne McGurk, the organisation is delighted to see Alex take on this role.

Commissioner, Chris Quinn, said: “I want to congratulate Alex on taking on the role of Interim Chief Executive. She brings exceptional leadership experience, and this level of expertise will be invaluable in helping us to address current issues through a child’s rights lens.

“I am confident that under Alex’s direction we can build on our strengths and successes and further enhance the work we do for children and young people in Northern Ireland.”

Interim Chief Executive, Alex Tennant, said: “I’m honoured to have been appointed to this role, leading the staff team to support the Commissioner to advocate for positive change for children in Northern Ireland.

“It is a privilege to do this work with, and on behalf of, children across Northern Ireland, and in partnership with parents, civic society and all those working with children across a wide range of services.”
