“It is a first for Northern Ireland focusing on reducing the amount of harmful greenhouse gases in our atmosphere and represents a significant step forward in delivering Northern Ireland’s climate commitments.

“Climate change is happening in front of us, and it is impacting all our futures, especially children and young people who must face the consequences of generations of environmental breakdown. Therefore, I am pleased that DAERA has been actively working with children and young people in the co-design of this plan.

“From its development to delivery, we will hold the NI Executive to account for their continued engagement with families and young people throughout the progression of this action plan.

I strongly encourage everyone to read the plan, strengthen it, start conversations about our changing climate and have your say in the public consultation.

“It is my and NICCY’s responsibility to make sure government upholds children and young people’s rights to be protected from environmental harm and grow up in a healthy, safe, and sustainable world.

“We follow the UN’s General Comment 26, which monitors the impact of rights and outlines the effects of our changing environment on the rights of children and young people.

“Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it is a children’s rights issue, impacting all areas of their lives and particularly impacting those children are already living in poverty. Their voices, views and participation in this conversation are vital.”

The Climate Action plan is open for public consultation until 8 October. Visit DAERA’s website for more information on how to submit your response.
