“I welcome the proposals announced by Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald for young people with special educational needs (SEN) to have improved access to learning opportunities after leaving school.
It is well documented that we have a SEND crisis; indeed, the Department for Economy have highlighted a 29% increase in learners with Special Educational Needs over the last 20 years, a 134% increase in pupils with a Statement of SEN, and the growing complexity of needs. So, while today’s proposals are a step in the right direction, more needs to be done to support our children and young people.
I have consistently called for legislative change, advising the minister that parents have repeatedly told me that they need to see change now.
It is imperative that ongoing engagement and effective communication with children, young people, parents, carers, and educators to enhance stakeholder involvement and communication channels is at the heart of a response to this crisis, a point the team at NICCY have consistently highlighted to elected representatives.”
