“I condemn the racially motivated violence witnessed in recent days in the strongest possible terms. Our children and young people are being exploited by individuals with ulterior motives and we must do everything in our power to protect them.
The alleged serious sexual assault reported in Ballymena is horrific, and the thoughts of my office and I are with the victim and their family. This crime is being investigated, and the justice process must be allowed to take its course.
However, let me be clear, there are many people who offer nothing to their communities who are weaponising this situation to exploit tensions. These people care little, if anything, about justice or the communities they claim to protect.
Everyone has the right to protest peacefully – but there is no justification for the racist violence we have witnessed over the last few days.
A unified strategic response to protect children from harm including abuse, violence, coercion and exploitation by organised gangs and groups is required – and it is imperative that children, young people, families and community and voluntary organisations are involved in the development of this strategic response.
I also continue to be concerned about the rising levels of misinformation online. Children are being targeted and manipulated in ways that put their safety, wellbeing, and mental health at significant risk. It is unacceptable that they should be exposed to such dangers – and we must do more to educate, empower, and protect them from these threats.
Finally, my thoughts are with everyone affected by the current disorder and I am making a heartfelt and urgent appeal for calm across society.”
