UK Children’s Commissioners’ Joint Statement on Tax Credits

The four UK Children’s Commissioners welcome the opportunity provided by the vote in the House of Lords last night to reconsider the proposals to drastically reduce the provision of tax credits to children and families.

We urge the Chancellor, George Osborne, to undertake a full assessment of the likely impact on children of any revised plans regarding tax and benefits and to avoid any measures that will reduce the ability of low income families to provide for their children’s needs.

We remind the UK Government that, as signatories to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, it has an obligation to undertake such analysis when considering new budgetary measures.
