Laughter, memories and hopes for the future filled the air as NICCY hosted a special celebration to mark the achievements of its Youth Panel members and to reopen a time capsule first sealed in 2013.
The event brought together current and former Youth Panel members alongside Commissioners past and present.
Inside the capsule were messages, drawings, DVDs and reports chosen by young people more than a decade ago, capturing their priorities at that time.
Those attending the event were also shown this 2013 video featuring NICCY youth panel members, MLAs, and former Commissioners discussing children’s rights.
Commissioner Chris Quinn said: “Today is about celebrating the voices of young people. Our Youth Panel members remind us that children and young people are not only voices for the future, but they are also speaking out now. NICCY works to ensure their voices are heard by decision makers, and it is inspiring to see how both past and present members have shaped change in Northern Ireland.”
Much of what was called for in 2013, equality, respect for young people’s voices, stronger action on bullying, and the incorporation of the UNCRC into law remains relevant today.
Former Commissioner Patricia Lewsley-Mooney reflected: “It was great to look back on where the organisation started and how far it has come. While progress has not always been as fast as we hoped, we have laid vital building blocks.

“The incorporation of the UNCRC in Northern Ireland would ensure children’s rights are legally protected and not just an aspiration. It would allow us to respond to the local challenges children and young people face here such as mental health, poverty and education while ensuring they have a voice.”
The day also marked the achievements of Youth Panel members finishing their term at NICCY. Thomas, Sara and Emily were awarded with certificates for their time on the youth panel and spoke eloquently about their experiences. During their time, members have engaged with MLAs, attended Assembly committee meetings, and led campaigns on key issues for children and young people.
Former NYP member Thomas Dean said:“NICCY has helped me with my confidence and given me valuable knowledge.”
Outgoing member Sara Ivanov added: “When I started, I was shy but NICCY gave me the confidence and experience to speak in public and develop diplomacy skills. I would recommend it to anyone.”
Former Commissioner Koulla Yiasouma, who was also at the event, added: “It’s been fantastic to be here with Patricia and Chris to reflect not only on the journey of the office itself, but also on the wider progress of children’s rights in Northern Ireland.
“What made today even more special was celebrating with our amazing Youth Panel members, past and present, who are at the heart of everything NICCY does.”
To close the celebration, young people placed new messages into the capsule reflecting their hopes for the future.
The capsule has now been resealed, ready to be opened by a future generation in a society where we hope children’s rights are fully protected in law and in practice.
