Equality law should reflect best international standards, taking account of best practice and lessons other jurisdictions while meeting our specific needs in NI. We understand that there are significant gaps between equality law between NI and the rest of the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and wider jurisdictions.
We encourage the Committee to consider examples of best practice even outside neighbouring jurisdictions. We note that there have been previous calls for a single ‘Equality Bill’ for NI to harmonise and simplify the protections available for everyone and NICCY encourages the Committee within their inquiry to consider what the best options would be for all protecting children and young people.
