Response to consultation – Age Goods Facilities and Services Bill

NICCY welcomes the opportunity to provide written evidence to the consultation on ‘Addressing Age Discrimination in Goods, Facilities, and Services’ which seeks views on proposals to introduce legislation that would prevent unjustified age discrimination in the provision of goods, facilities, and services, ensuring that individuals are treated fairly and with dignity. NICCY wishes to elaborate on some of our work to date on this children’s rights issue that relate to the proposals and provide advice on key consultation questions.

We are mindful that the TEO Committee of the NI Assembly undertook an Inquiry into Equality Legislation to find out where equality legislation is different in NI to other jurisdictions and to understand the impacts this has. It is our understanding that the Committee are due to publish their report soon, which may include recommendations for legislative reform.

NICCY welcomes the development of the proposals and the opportunity to provide a response and thanks the Member for her early engagement with us. We encourage the Member to engage with children and young people directly and ensure that their voices and experiences are heard and reflected in any legislation that must cover all ages. NICCY are happy to discuss any of these matters should it be useful for the Member in the development of the Bill further to consultation.

The full response can be downloaded at the right-hand side of this page.
