NICCY Youth Panel member Rhea has welcomed the new school uniform guidelines, saying: “I am really pleased that the new school uniform guidelines now say that schools are to give girls the option to wear trousers. This is what Astrid and I started campaigning for, because we didn’t think any girl should have to fight her own school just to be given that choice.
“I’m proud that speaking up has helped to make a change that will affect girls right across Northern Ireland.
“However, I am disappointed that the change will not apply until the 2027-28 school year. Girls are in schools now who don’t have this choice, and I do not understand why they should have to wait another year.
“I also still believe that the right to wear trousers should be put into law. The guidelines are legally binding, which is really important, but putting the right clearly into legislation would give it even stronger and more lasting protection.
“Astrid and I never wanted other girls to have to campaign like we did. We wanted every girl, in every school, to have the choice. This is a really important step towards that.”
