Commenting on the Department of Justice Launch of its Consultation on Raising the Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility, Koulla Yiasouma, NI Commissioner for Children and Young People, said:

“I am delighted the Department has issued its consultation on raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility.

“It is encouraging the Minister is following through on her commitment to ensure services and responses to children are rights compliant, recognising the impact of adverse childhood experiences on their lives.

“I know that raising the age at which young people come into contact with the Criminal Justice System will achieve better outcomes for children and also make our communities safer.

“I very much look forward to engaging with the debate to make sure the Department is able to progress raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 16, for all young people and without exception.”
